NBA 2K21 MyTeam Must Have One Feature, Or It Won’t Be Worth Playing Again This Year

NBA 2K’s MyTeam mode probably has the most potential of any feature in the game, and this is coming from someone who lives and dies with MyLeague and MyGM.

Unfortunately, by February of every year, MyTeam has become a gluttonous mess that is harder for me to take seriously even when looking through my MyTeam fantasy-filtered glasses. I know it’s a fantasy mode and micro-transactions are big business, but at some point, fans and 2K have to know when to push away from the table.

Fans have to realize, they probably have enough cards to compete, and 2K has to say to themselves, we probably don’t need to release the 999th Galaxy Opal, despite the fact that it will obviously create a spike on virtual pack purchases.

I’m not against micro-transactions in general, but things get a little out of hand with MyTeam if you don’t put your hand over the top of the proverbial coffee cup.

At launch, MyTeam has excellent competitive balance. There aren’t a wealth of overpowered cards and users have to actually find lower-level players that can be effective. One of the most fun things to do in MyTeam is to find that Emerald, Sapphire, Ruby or Amethyst that plays above its gem level.

Unfortunately, right around what is usually the All-Star Break, all hell breaks loose and the mode is flooded with overpowered nonsense and much of the strategy goes out the window. MyTeam becomes a race to see who can grab up all of the top cards, and it just worse leading up to the next version of the game.

After playing MyTeam heavy for the better part of a year, and compiling a pretty amazing collection, I probably won’t play the mode in NBA 2K21 unless something is done to bring some structure to the concept.

That structure could easily come in the form of a salary cap function. It’s in Madden’s Ultimate Team and a flawed iteration of the concept was in NBA 2K before. It was called SuperMax, but it went away after one imperfect year.

In a previous article, I talked about this concept. One rising tournament organizer has already taken this idea into the MyTeam stratosphere as a basis for an eSports vehicle.

If a salary cap mode is there, in addition to, and not instead of Unlimited, there would always be an option for users who were looking for a way to play the collector mode within some parameters that simply aren’t present currently.

In a well-conceived salary cap mode, you probably shouldn’t have the freedom to carry more than two Galaxy Opal cards without having to fill out the rest of your lineup with Rubies or lower. These kinds of restrictions could be the basis for tournaments, seasons concepts and more.

Quite honestly, I’ve gone on the year-long and relatively shameful MyTeam journey for the last time, at least as currently constructed. In order for me to log in for another year, the salary cap feature is a must.
